On May 25, 2018, businesses around the globe will be affected by the European Union’s strict new privacy law called the General Data Protection Regulation (the “GDPR”). If you are a business that collects personal information from EU residents, you are required to comply with GDPR regardless of whether or not you have a business presence in the EU. For example, if you are a US based company who transacts in the EU but do not have a physical presence in the EU, you are nonetheless subject to GDPR compliance. Additionally, if you are processing personal information on behalf of a company who collects that data (defined as a Data Controller), you too are subject to the GDPR.
Much of the GDPR is difficult to understand, can be costly and complex to implement in a compliant manner. Multinational companies have been preparing for the last two years since the GDPR was signed into law and many aren’t even aware that they should have also.
Failure to comply with GDPR can be costly - administrative fines imposed by EU regulators can be a maximum of 20 million Euros (over $24 million US dollars), or 4 percent of annual global turnover (note global turnover!) whichever is higher.
GDPR requires that your business has technical, administrative and physical controls in place to protect personal information which affect your people, your processes and your technology. Security Validation knows exactly how to do this for you so you don’t have to sweat it.
